Welcome to Heart Healthy Recipes' Newsletter

The orange is the featured heart-healthy food for this month’s newsletter.

Oranges are usually in-season from November to June. This heart-healthy fruit is often eaten by itself, served as a garnish, made into a salad or the juice added as a natural sweetener with many health benefits.

Included in this month’s newsletter are several recipes to help you incorporate into a heart-healthy diet. Recipes include an orange smoothie, vinaigrette, along with an orange glaze recipe suitable for a seafood dish.

Health Benefits of Oranges

The orange may help the heart by lowering high blood pressure due to high levels of potassium found in each. Also, the high content of vitamin C in the fruit helps reduce blood pressure.

The vitamin C antioxidant in oranges also helps over-all health by boosting the immune system, along with helping to protect cells from damage, reducing inflammation and protecting the heart.

Oranges are high in dietary fiber helping to lower LDL or unhealthy cholesterol, along with aiding healthy digestion. The fiber of oranges may also help lower blood pressure.

Also, oranges are low in calories and fat making them a healthy snack choice to aid in weight management.
