Welcome to Heart Healthy Recipes' Newsletter!

This month’s newsletter features more summer recipes, including refreshing summer smoothies. These heart-healthy smoothies help to keep hydrated during the hot summer months. Included are three refreshing summer smoothies of mango, blueberry and raspberry.


Mango Smoothie

A creamy mango smoothie that is made with yogurt, frozen mangoes, juice and blended together for a refreshing drink. Also, the mangoes are rich in magnesium and potassium, which may help lower blood pressure and maintain a regular pulse. In addition, mangoes contain a compound known as mangiferin, which may help reduce inflammation in the heart.

Recipe Ingredients:

2 cups mangoes, frozen chunks

12 ounces low-fat yogurt

1 teaspoon vanilla

½ cup orange juice

juice of ½ lime

fresh mangoes and mint sprigs (optional)

Recipe Instructions:

Place the mangoes, yogurt, vanilla, orange juice and lime in blender and blend until smooth. Pour into glasses and serve. Garnish with fresh mangoes and mint sprigs if desired.

Makes 2 servings.

Blueberry Smoothie

Antioxidant-rich blueberries are the highlight in this refreshing, healthy smoothie. The phytonutrients and soluble fiber in the blueberries also help keep the heart healthy.

Recipe Ingredients:

2 cups almond drink

1 banana

1½ cups blueberries, frozen

12 ounces low-fat yogurt

1 teaspoon vanilla

fresh blueberries and mint sprigs for garnish (optional)

Recipe Instructions:

Combine almond drink, banana, blueberries, yogurt and vanilla in blender and blend until smooth. Pour into glasses and serve. Garnish with berries and mint sprig if desired.

Makes 2 servings.

Raspberry Smoothie

In season raspberries help make up this dairy-free smoothie. The various antioxidants present in raspberries may also help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and help lower blood pressure.

Recipe Ingredients:

2 cups raspberries, frozen

1 banana

2 cups oat drink

1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey

½ cup ice

mint sprigs for garnish (optional)

Recipe Instructions:

Place raspberries, banana, oat drink, maple syrup or honey and ice into blender. Blend until smooth. Pour into glasses and serve. Garnish with frozen raspberries and mint sprig if desired.

Makes 2 servings.
